Like many people, I didn’t have a healthy start in life. As a child, I was abused, which made me feel worthless. I abused my body with drugs and alcohol to numb the pain. After becoming a single mother, I found myself in a series of emotionally abusive relationships, and I felt it was all my fault. I didn’t think anyone cared about me, but a coworker mentioned that Live Violence Free has resources that can help people fleeing abusive relationships. I took a chance and called their 24-hour crisis line.
Recovery wasn’t easy, and progress was slow. My depression would take hold, making it hard to find a partner that treated me well. Sometimes, I was ashamed that I had slipped back into old habits. I let my past sabotage my progress. The team at Live Violence Free never made me feel unworthy of their support. Counseling and housing assistance from LVF helped me break the cycle.
I am working full-time and studying to build my future with my wonderful kids. I have learned that there is beauty in recovery, and I am proud of who I have become today.
